National Progressive Dravida Kazhagam was started in 2005. DMDK became a new alternative in Tamil Nadu which was ruled by Dravidian parties like DMK and AIADMK.
Declaring himself an alternative to the DMK and the AIADMK, Vijayakanth contested the 2006 Assembly elections and the 2009 Lok Sabha elections alone without an alliance.
